The human rights group ELS-HAM has claimed that the Freeport mine killings of two Americans and an Indonesian will not be investigated properly due to military involvement in the shootings. Twelve people were also reported injured in the August 31st shootings. The Indonesian government has stated that they suspect the separatist group Free Papua Movement carried out the crime. But with the recently diminishing role of the military in the Papua province of Indonesia, many suspect that the military conducted the killings in order to justify their presence in the region and to extort money from large international corporations seeking military protection.
