Numbering more than 7.5 million people, the Uyghur, formerly nomads of China, mostly live in the western Xinjiang region. Since 1754 Xinjiang has been under Chinese political domination. For years Beijing has been attempting to suppress Uyghur religious activities, linking them to separatist movements. However, after the September 11 terrorist attacks China has decided to link its campaign against the Uyghur to the worldwide war on terrorism.
