Indigenous Peoples Must Not Be Left Behind

We will not be left behind! Indigenous people stand up against exclusion.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange in South Africa was the scene of protest action put together by Khoi and San groups from South Africa. Echoes of the struggle song, “What have we done,” which is reminiscent of apartheid South Africa, could be heard in Maude Street Sandton, where the Stock Exchange is situated, the richest square mile in Africa.

Cultural Survival's Indigenous Rights Radio producer Dev Kumar Sunuwar from Nepal also interviews Tunda Lepore from the Maasai People of Kenya on traditional food customs.

Dev Kumar Sunuwar also speaks to Phrang Roy, Khasi biodiversity activist from Northeast India, Shillong, about how Indigenous Peoples can contribute to food security.

End Poverty: Indigenous People Pay a Visit to the Stock Exchange

In this program, Cultural Survival spoke to Anthony Williams, the leader of Indigenous First Nation Advocacy of South Africa (IFNASA). Williams tells of the exclusion of Indigenous Peoples from the economy of South Africa.

Maasai Indigenous People of Kenya and their food systems
Maasai are semi-nomadic pastoralists who migrate within semi-arid lowlands and more humid uplands to obtain water and pasture. The large majority of them obtain their livelihood through husbandry of cattle, goat and sheep. Their food culture is very unique as they rely on meat, milk and blood from cattle for protein and energy needs. Lately with the gradual loss of elder members of the Maasaicommunity who carry most of its Indigenous knowledge, Maasai communities are beginning to lose their customary practices.

Indigenous Communities and Food Security
The UN has set the goal to achieve food security and reduce hunger by the year 2030. Towards this end, there is a need to pay attention to Indigenous Peoples, to recognize their Indigenous food systems, food production, and to give recognition to their knowledge systems. So far not enough attention has been paid to the role that Indigenous Peoples can play in world food security.
