On March 18, the India Department of Indian Medicines licensed herbal remedies
made by Irula women to cure maladies from indigestion to headaches. The Hindu reports that this venture not only aims at preserving traditional knowledge but
also provides much needed employment to tribal women. The majority of southern
Indian Irulas live in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. Irula women are
known for their knowledge of medicinal plants and their healing properties.
