INDIA: Indian Supreme Court ruling favorable to Jarawa

The Indian Supreme Court ordered the closure of the Andaman Trunk Road and the removal of settlers from tribal reserves on May 7, 2002. These two issues have threatened the cultural survival of the Jarawa, a nomadic hunter-gatherer tribe. It remains to be seen whether the order will be implemented, but the closure should alleviate concerns about poaching, logging and disease.
