INDIA: Dalits converting to Buddhism due to prejudice from the upper caste

Citing violence from upper caste people in their community, the family of a Dalit man who was killed for attending a temple converted to Buddhism on September 9. This action resulted in about two dozen other community members also converting. The converters say they can no longer take the abuses of upper caste men by remaining Hindu. The threats of violence to Dalits are being denied by local police officials.
