World Bank and European Union leaders acknowledged at a recently held conference in Budapest, the urgency of ending ethnic discrimination against the Roma in Europe. About five million Roma will join the European Union as 10 mostly central and eastern European countries become members in 2004. With this addition, the Roma population will represent the largest ethnic minority in Europe.
