HONDURAS: Garifuna villagers hurt by tropical storms

Garifuna peoples of the north coast of Honduras are working to transfer their communities away from the coast and the threat of hurricanes that have destroyed several Garifuna villages over the last four years. Unlike the central areas of the country that benefited from the government’s reconstruction efforts after Hurricane Mitch and Michelle, the Garifuna were left to fend for themselves. In response, Garifuna women have come together to form the Emergency Garifuna Committee of Honduras to try and save their communities without government aid.
