Guatemala Radio Project Listener Profile: Sergio Rojo

Sergio Rojo lives in a small town called Santa Maria de Jesús, on the slope of the long dormant Volcán de Agua just outside of Antigua, Guatemala.  At 19, he has finished his studies and now works in the field to help his family.  Cultural Survival caught up with him on his way back from gathering wood to heat his mother's fire for the family's lunch. He carries the radio with him to the fields to pass the time.  He only listens to local radio, one of two community stations in the town, La Voz de Santa Maria ("The Voice of Santa Maria") or La Voz del Hogar ("The Voice of the Home").  He prefers these to the commercial radio stations from Guatemala City because they broadcast in his native language, Kakchiquel.  Sergio said his whole family gathers around the radio to listen during meals, and his mother especially enjoys listening  while working around the house.
