Victor Montejo, a distinguished Mayan author and professor at American University, was appointed Secretary of Peace, a ministerial level post in President Oscar Berger’s office. Montejo will supervise the progress of the Peace Accords that ended the 36-year Guatemalan Civil War, in which tens of thousands of indigenous Maya-Quiche were killed.
