GUATEMALA: Indigenous women offered legal opportunity to work in Canada

A program designed and implemented by the International Organization of Migrations, the Canadian Embassy, and the Chancellor of the Guatemalan Ministry of Labor will give 167 Guatemalans, 31 of which are indigenous women, the opportunity to travel to Canada to obtain legal, temporary work in fruit and vegetable picking. The indigenous women chosen are mothers between the ages of 25 and 40 and have previous work experience picking vegetables. Despite the labor-intensive jobs into which they will be placed, those involved are excited at the opportunity to legally earn a higher wage. At the end of the four month long program, the immigrants will return home.
