Although August 9th was the International Day of Indigenous Villages, celebrations in Guatemala were few, where neither the government nor Maya organizations organized any public recognition of the event. While 50 percent of Guatemala’s population is indigenous, the lack of official recognition of the international “holiday” affirms the concerns held by the United Nations for the protection of indigenous rights in Guatemala.
