GREENLAND: U.S. base may expand, proved useful during Iraq war

The Thule U.S. Air Force Base in Greenland may expand, in spite of the Greenland Home Rule Government’s objections. The base has been the subject of considerable protest from Native Greenlanders who were displaced in 1951. The American military would like the option to expand the base as part of the U.S. National Missile Defense plan. Native Greenlanders have long opposed the base, and are asking what benefits the expansion will bring to them. Denmark (of which Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory), has rejected Greenland’s proposal that the entire agreement be renegotiated.
