GHANA: Traditional Council seeks compromise

The Kwahu Traditional Council of Ghana’s Eastern Region issued a statement this week in response to recent violence between indigenous Fulani pastoralists and Ewe settlers. Resource competition has increased in the area since ethnic Ewe migrated from neighboring districts to appropriate large portions of Kwahu land and water sources for themselves. According to the council leaders, both groups have violated traditional regulations regarding land use and must sign legally binding tenancy agreements to establish peace in the region.
