FINLAND: Development project threatens sacred site

Research is underway concerning the development of a natural spring water-prospecting project in northern Finland at a site greatly revered by local Saami. For millennia the Suttesaja “spring that does not freeze over” was the final site where Saami ritually cleansed themselves before their journey up the sacred mountain of Ailegas. Saami throughout the area have initiated a growing protest movement against the project due to concerns that one of their last remaining sites of cultural heritage will be forever altered if not completely destroyed by its operations.
