ETHIOPIA: Drought racks Afar region, as ethnic violence compounds problem

In the midst of a severe drought that has affected large swaths of Ethiopia and Somalia, aid groups are reporting that tribal conflicts between pastoralists are impeding efforts to provide urgent food relief. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) have mobilized to provide 100,000 people with emergency food assistance, particularly in Afar villages in Afar Regional State and Issa communities in Somali Regional State. The drought has led to frequent clashes between tribes over water supplies. Lack of rainfall has devastated the crucial maize harvest and affected livestock products throughout Ethiopia.
