ECUADOR: Sarayaku community threatened by oil company

After four years of open violations of the recognized rights of indigenous peoples as framed by the Ecuadorian constitution, the Compania General de Combustibles (CGC) of Argentina has installed an operation base in Chontoa. A group of uniformed men have reportedly invaded the indigenous territories of the Sarayko. There have been threats made to those opposing the petroleum project, and divisions within the communities that have accepted it. Computers and outboard motors have been offered to some communities in order to win them over. Men and women from Sarayaku are currently mobilizing from the jungle to the city of Puyo. Most are elders who want to speak with the president of Ecuador, with support from the Office of Human Rights and other institutions. They wish to discuss the presence of the CGC and push for its withdrawal from the territory.
