EAST TIMOR: UN tribunal issues indictments for Indonesian military officers

Four Indonesian military officials and a former militia commander have been indicted by United Nations prosecutors in connection with atrocities committed in 1999 in East Timor. The offiials are among 15 soldiers and 17 militia members accused of murder, torture and other crimes. According to a UN spokesperson, the indictment is one of the largest and most important to date in the case. However, it might prove difficult to bring the accused to trial, as they reside in Indonesia, which so far has refused to accept the UN arrest warrants.
