DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: Pygmies make hard choices in working for lumber companies

As their forests and the game and sustenance they provide are diminished, some Pygmy groups of the Democratic Republic of Congo find they have little choice but to work for the agents of their destruction – logging companies. The New York Times reported in its Sunday edition this week on the tragic lack of options facing some Pygmy communities in the DRC. For many, logging work is the only way they can make a living and feed themselves. Swiss lumber company CIB employs about 160 Pygmies, and says it is making efforts to improve their situation and protect their culture. Their Pygmy workers say they only hope that part of the forests can be saved, but the rate of felling continues at an alarming pace.
