CUBA: Indigenous Calusa descendents may be found on Cuba

Anthropologist John Worth, in his search for evidence of the Calusa Indians who lived in southwest Florida from around the year 100 to the early 18th century, has turned to the island of Cuba. Worth believes that in the 1760s a group of 60 to 70 Calusa refugees fled to Cuba to escape invading Native American tribes, Spanish soldiers, and foreign diseases such as smallpox. He is hopeful that living descendents of the Calusa may be located in Cuba through historical records and manuscripts.
