COLOMBIA: Embera indigenous leader murdered by FARC

Bertulfo Domico Domico, an Embera indigenous leader, was murdered on July 27 by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). FARC is a leftist rebel group that has been at war with the State for 38 years. The President of the Indigenous Organization of Antioquia (OIA), Abadio Green, stated that Domico Domico, who was the constable of the community of Llano Gordo, was murdered because he “left the territory of that constituency without the permission of the FARC Commander of Front 5.” According to OIA, Mr. Domico left the constituency in order to do various errands for the community. The guerrillas have prohibited his family from taking his body to Dabeiba to be buried. Commenting on the difficult situation of indigenous groups in the area, who are subject to violent reprisals by both the FARC and the government, Mr. Green said, “Once again we are worried about the situation of the indigenous communities and we wonder how to deal with these problems that are generated by violence…we are in the middle of a cross fire...”
