Cobell Nominated for Congressional Award

Elouise Cobell (Blackfeet) has been nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal after taking the U.S. government to court for mismanaging more than a century of American Indian land trust royalties. The lawsuit resulted in a $3.4 billion settlement for an estimated 500,000 Native Americans.The Congressional Gold Medal, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is the highest civilian award in the United States. It is awarded to an individual who performs an outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the country.
