CHILE: Projected dam scheme raises Indian anger

During an official ceremony, President Ricardo Lagos of Chile witnessed fierce shouting and demonstrations from a member of the Pehuenche tribe. The woman was protesting against plans for the Spanish company Endesa to commence construction of a dam on the Bio Bio River, a territory to which the Pehuenche claim native rights. Her protest sparked off clashes with police in Rio Grande do Sul state, resulting in the hospitalization of ten anti-dam protesters.
