Lawyer Rory Morahan and a team of researchers met with members of the Tl’azt’en nation on Tuesday, May 27 to prepare a lawsuit against Cominco Ltd. and the Canadian government. The company, which operated mercury mines near Lake Pinchi from 1940 to 1944 and again from 1968 to 1975, has admitted to dumping large amounts of waste mercury into the lake used as drinking water and fishing grounds by the Tl’azt’en. Though Cominco has already spent nearly $3 million on a cleanup effort, most Tl’azt’en continue to experience health problems from lifelong exposure to mercury.
