CANADA: Inuit protest misuse of cultural symbol

Representatives from Inuit organizations met in Ottawa last week with specialists in intellectual property laws from the federal Department of Foreign Affairs to discuss use by non-Inuit businesses of the inuksuk as a marketing device. Inuit argue that the inuksuk, a cultural symbol used to direct hunters on the tundra, should be protected under intellectual property rights. Current legislation, however, only protects new or original ideas, making it difficult to protect traditional symbols.
