CANADA: Fontaine elected AFN chief for a second time

Phil Fontaine was elected chief of the Assembly of First Nations for a second time on Wednesday, July 16 and sworn into office immediately thereafter. Fontaine held the same position a few years ago but was defeated in the 2000 election by conservative Cree leader from Quebec Matthew Coon Come. Fontaine is regarded to be a much more liberal leader and has promised to improve relations between natives and the Canadian government.
