CANADA: Dene tribe asks northern neighbors to share lands

Eighteen representatives of the Dene tribe from northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba traveled to the Northwest Territories last week to ask Akaitcho leaders to support their land claim. They are asking for co-management with the Akaitcho of their traditional lands and local wildlife north of the 60th parallel. Dene leaders explain that much of their traditional land was given to the Inuit by the federal government, and now they must ask their northern friends for help in order to survive as a Dene people. Akaitcho leaders invited the Dene to stay for an extra day to continue discussions.
