CANADA: Aboriginal-only fisheries shut down after judge’s ruling

The Canadian federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced on Tuesday, July 29 that all aboriginal-only fisheries will be shut down because of a court decision reached the day before. On Monday, British Colombia Provincial Court Judge William Kitchen ruled that aboriginal-only fisheries, which receive certain benefits over non-native ones, are racist and illegitimate. Canada’s First Nations expected the DFO to appeal the decision and maintain the fisheries, but now, the individual tribes that it concerns will have to respond on their own.
