Campaign Update – Russia: Urge UNESCO to Protect the Sacred Ukok Plateau

Please take another step today in the campaign to protect the sacred Ukok Plateau from the construction of a damaging gas pipeline.

Send an email to UNESCO, expressing your concern that Russia is violating its obligation to protect the “Golden Mountains of Altai” UNESCO World Heritage Site, an area that is sacred to the Indigenous Telengit people.  For at least 8,000 years, the Telengit have journeyed to the high Ukok Plateau to bury their dead with sacred ceremonies and give offerings to the spirits of the heavens, the mountains, and the waters.  Now, in violation of its own laws and international commitments, Russia wants to build a natural gas pipeline that would bisect the sacred Ukok Plateau and the established Golden Mountains of Altai UNESCO World Heritage Site in Russia.

Please send an email today to the Honorable Ms. Bokova, General Director of the World Heritage Center, asking her to use every avenue within UNESCO to persuade Russia not to build a pipeline across the Ukok Plateau, and to guarantee the permanent protection of this unique cultural and ecological treasure.
