CAMBODIA: Montagnards depart for resettlement in US

Cambodian prime minister Hun Shen, has decided to allow 900 Montagnard refugees from Vietnam to seek resettlement in the US. The Montagnards, members of ethnic hill tribes in Vietnam, face persecution in their homeland based on their Christian faith and their cooperation with US forces during the Vietnam War. Shen’s decision came with pressure from Washington and human rights groups, but he has also stated that refugee camps will now be closed and that Montagnard asylum seekers will be turned back at the border.
