BURUNDI: Eleven Killed in Ambush, Including Only Pygmy Senator

Senator Jean-Bosco Rutagengwa, the only representative of the Twa ethnic group in Burundi’s National Assembly, was among eleven people killed last week in a rebel ambush near the capital of Bujumbura. Authorities do not believe that Rutagengwa was the target of the attack; eight other civilians and two government soldiers were among the victims. The Twa, also known as pygmies, are the indigenous people of the region, making up 1 percent of Burundi’s 6.5 million citizens.
