Protests in several Southeast Asian countries marked the 15th anniversary of the pro-democracy movement that was crushed by the Burmese military on August 8, 1988. Many of the protestors used the event to call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, a pro-democracy leader. Over 300 National League for Democracy members have recently been imprisoned, and all party offices were closed for the anniversary.
