A recent report by Amnesty International denounces the practices of the Burmese military regime, which has used forced labor, extortion and land confiscation against the Karen, Shan, Mon, and other ethnic groups. However, the report also acknowledges progress on the part of the government, such as the release of 300 political prisoners, including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
