BRAZIL: Zero Hunger Program draws fire from critics

Experts are questioning the sustainability of Brazil’s new Zero Hunger Program, Amazonia.org reports. From anthropologists to FUNAI administrators, many say that the program will foster Indian dependence on white society. The Zero Hunger Program, ambitiously designed to eradicate hunger and poverty in Brazil, was launched by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on January 30. Critics of the program contend that it discourages Indian groups from continuing traditional practices of hunting and gathering. Despite these potential drawbacks, many Indian communities have expressed support for the program and optimism about its potential for future expansion.
