According to a joint study by Brazil’s National Institute of Amazon Research and the University of Michigan, 95 percent of original forest area will be destroyed by 2020 if road building and industrial development programs continue at their current pace. So far, some 12 to 20 percent of the Amazon has already been deforested or significantly degraded.
