The Coordination of the Union of Indigenous Peoples of Rondonia (CUNPIR) is threatening direct action if steps are not taken by May 21 to evict illegal occupants of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau and Karipunas Indigenous Territories. Thousands of landless peasants moved into the remote area two weeks ago, causing a standoff that observers fear could lead to armed clashes with the indigenous inhabitants. The government has announced that it would try to persuade the peasants to leave before sending in police to remove them. A court order has stipulated the removal of the invaders, but no concrete action has apparently been taken.
