A project to record the Puruborá, Mekens, Xipáya, Ayuru and Mondé languages will receive funding from the British government, and NGOs such as the Volkswagen Foundation are pledging to finance other language projects. Financial support is vital to the success of these projects. Out of 150 funding proposals, only 21 were approved for government funding. Of the 160 indigenous languages spoken in Brazil, at least 42 are on the verge of extinction. Indigenous communities increasingly regard the documentation of these languages as vital to the viability of their culture.
