BRAZIL: Plan to monitor action in Deforestation Belt

To protect Brazil’s Amazon rainforest the government has determined a R$ 20 million plan to monitor action in the Deforestation Belt, an area largely affected by logging and agriculture. In a meeting last Wednesday, the Lula government promised that all actions and policies affecting the rainforests will be environmentally sound. In accordance with these plans The National Institute of Space Research (INPE) has begun monitoring programs in 14 vulnerable areas throughout Para, Mato Grosso and Rondonia to protect against illegal land occupation and logging. These programs are carried out through the use of satellite images and field data.
