Within the next year, gas company Petrobras will begin construction on the Coari-Manaus pipeline. It is currently seeking a license to carryout more studies on the project’s environmental impact. The project will cost $300 million (U.S.) and is a priority of the company. The company claims that the pipeline is necessary to access the Urucu gas field and that Amazonians will benefit from cheaper and environmentally safer fuels. Indigenous groups from the affected area have expressed skepticism and concern about the project’s impact.
