BRAZIL: Indigenous woman wins human rights award

Joênia Batista de Carvalho, a Wapixana woman and the first female indigenous lawyer in Brazil, has won the Reebok Human Rights Award in recognition of her activism in support of the Wapixana people’s struggle for land rights and her defense of the victims of human rights violations. The announcement of the winners, which included three other human rights activists, took place March 8 at the United Nations in New York City in celebration of International Women’s Day.
