BRAZIL: Indigenous lawyer appeals to human rights commission

Indigenous Wapichana lawyer Joênia Batista de Carvalho will appeal to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington, D.C., asking the commission to pressure Brazilian President Luíz Inácio da Silva to keep his promise to protect indigenous rights. She represents the people of Raposa Serra do Sol, a region plagued by anti-indigenous sentiment and land rights struggles.
