A government official reiterated last week plans to evict several thousand landless peasants who have illegally entered an indigenous reserve in the Amazonian state of Rondonia. The official, Brazil’s agrarian ombudsman, said police were preparing to expel the invaders to avert a potential ‘massacre’ of the greatly outnumbered local indigenous people, including the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau tribe. Death threats made by the peasants against the local agrarian reform officer have been reported recently.
