On July 15th, 2003, indigenous leaders met with members of the non-governmental organization Amazonlink to discuss biopiracy in the Amazon region and to formulate ways to combat the problem. The urgency to the issue was exacerbated by news that outsiders have patented ‘vacina de sapo’ for commercial use, a remedy indigenous to the region.
