In a 32-page report released in early April, Amnesty International highlights the failure of the Brazilian government to meet its goal of securing land rights for the country’s indigenous people. The government’s goal was to ratify 580 official Indian reservations by 1993, but 12 years later the government has created only 340. In the report, Amnesty International attributes a number of murders and violence against indigenous people to the lack of secure land and asks Brazil to take action by settling land disputes and providing a safe living environment for indigenous people.
