Six San Bushmen were recently fined 1000 Botswana pula, the equivalent of 230
US dollars, for hunting for food in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR),
according to Survival International. Arrested in July 2004, the six Bushmen were
detained for two weeks without trial and finally charged with hunting antelope.
Seven other Bushmen charged with hunting have yet to be tried. The fines and
arrests contradict President Festus Mogae's statement in November 2004 to British
MP's that the Bushmen were allowed to hunt in the CKGR.
