BOTSWANA: Government attempts to block lawsuit

243 members of the indigenous San communities recently evicted from their homeland in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve have sued the government in a court case that began in Lobatse this week. They are claiming the government’s forced eviction, denial of services, and demolition of their homes to be unconstitutional. Botswana is attempting to have the case dismissed on the grounds that the primary applicant in the suit has no right to represent the San community, as he no longer lives on the reserve. The High Court Judge will make a ruling next Friday.
