Plan Dignity, a scheme militarizing young men against growers of the coca plant, has left hundreds of peasants and indigenous peoples in an inescapable position of poverty. Many Quechua and mestizo peasants have resorted to the growing of coca because more wholesome crops such as bananas and oranges cannot fetch a subsistence level profit.
