BOLIVIA: Gas war protests subside with president’s resignation

Weeks of protests over gas and the free market policies of former President Sanchez de Lozada came to halt this weekend with the president’s resignation. Vice president Carlos Mesa was appointed president early this week. Indigenous leaders Felipe Quispe and Evo Morales have given their support to Mesa but warned the new president that the peoples’ demands should be addressed soon or protests will resume.
