BANGLADESH: Mro protest displacement for tourism

The Mro, an indigenous group in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, are protesting the development of a 5,500 acre environmental management park and tourist attraction that will displace several hundred families in Bandaran. According to the Daily Star, the Mro protested the implementation of the park at Empu Para, an area in Bandaran on February 15. The park is planned to be built in Sadar, Roangchhari, Ruma and Lama regions.

In 2001, a similar park built in the Moulvibazar region, which was designed to heighten tourism as well as protect plant and wildlife, evicted thousands of Garo families and excacerbated ethnic tensions in the area between indigneous groups and Bengali settlers.
