AUSTRALIA: Land rights returns to Tasmanian government’s agenda

Jim Bacon, the Tasmanian Premier, announced his intent to reintroduce legislation that will return Crown land to Aboriginal communities. The last government attempt (in 2001) to return 50,000 hectares to indigenous owners was spoiled by the Legislative Council. Bacon hopes he will have more success with new legislation, citing land rights as a fundamental component of the reconciliation process.
